Case Studies / Carriageworks Night Market

Eveleigh • 2015 - 2023

Where food, culture, and community collide.

Carriageworks wanted to transform its Farmers Market into something extraordinary — a nighttime event that celebrated Sydney’s creative energy through food, art, and performance. The challenge was to scale a producers’ market into an immersive, high-volume experience without losing its authenticity or integrity.

Approach

As Creative Director, I curated the entire Night Market program — bringing together more than 50 of Australia’s leading chefs, restaurants, bars and producers under one roof.

Each edition was built around a central theme — from fire to seasonality to sustainability — blending food with music, design, and performance art. The event design emphasised openness and flow: long communal tables, ambient lighting, and the raw industrial character of Carriageworks itself.

Systems were developed to handle thousands of guests efficiently, while still allowing every stallholder to tell their story and every dish to express craft and provenance.

Outcome

Carriageworks Night Market became one of Sydney’s most iconic food events — attracting 8,000 + visitors at each event, and setting a national benchmark for how food can intersect with culture.

11 Night Markets, 11 different themes, over 7 years, it provided a platform for emerging chefs, restaurants, bars and small producers, elevating Carriageworks into a leading food destination, and proved that large-scale markets could be both commercially successful and culturally rich.
